A Message from the Principal
Charlton is a successful and popular 11-16 comprehensive school. We are well established and respected in our local community, with a consistent record of high standards. This is attributable to good examination results and acknowledges our caring and supportive environment, combining formality with good relationships between adults and students.
As Principal, I have a deep rooted passion for education and firmly believe that teaching is one of the most rewarding and important vocations. No other job allows you to touch the lives of so many, inspire a generation and shape the future for young people.
With the job of Principal comes great responsibility; it is my aim to provide the best possible education for all students at Charlton. To provide the students not only with the academic results needed for progression but also the personal, interpersonal and life skills to enable them to be successful in the future.
At Charlton we are committed to providing an exciting, broad curriculum, supported through a full range of wider curricular opportunities that allow students to realise their full academic, physical and social potential. Our curriculum plans for the needs of all learners, as they progress through their five years in our care, providing opportunities for enrichment to develop wider aspects of learning and personal development.
We wish for Charlton students to be seen both in school and by the wider community as mature, confident young people that wear the uniform with pride; who are responsible citizens, with a thirst for learning. We are looking for the students to engage fully in the vast amount of opportunities available to them, to enrich their experience and inspire them to find activities they will continue to engage with for life.
Students are guided via our strong pastoral system, with experienced staff who support their learning. All students have Form Tutors who serve as academic mentors to track their progress. Senior Tutors and Pastoral Managers offer further support, as required, accessing the services of external agencies and family support.
Partnership with our families and the wider community is really important to us, so that care, guidance and support systems are good and ensure that students who join the school at any stage are well supported. Our work with local primary schools focuses on building on primary experiences and strengths, to ensure a continuous learning journey for all.
We are tremendously proud of our new school building. It provides first rate facilities, purpose-built for the 21st century. Additional investment in state-of-the-art ICT, Sports, Expressive Arts, Science and Technology, have been a great boost to students’ already rich curriculum offer. We firmly believe that the new facilities will further strengthen our high performance across the school.
Our new build school opened in June 2016 and was the last school in the country to be completed under the Building Schools for the Future scheme. The transition from the old school to new was seamless, both staff and students settled quickly in to their new surroundings.
We would be delighted for you to visit us at Charlton and see how our team can make a positive difference to your child’s learning and development. Learning is at the heart of all we do, and we look forward to sharing our values and vision with you as promoted by our whole school community.
We look forward to meeting you!
Mr A McNaughton
