Charlton School

Curriculum Enhancement Day January 2022

At Charlton, we promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive Personal Development programme.

Dear Parents and Carers

At Charlton, we promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive Personal Development programme. PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) education is the curriculum subject that gives young people the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safe, healthy, productive lives and meet their full potential. Personal Development is a wider umbrella term that helps students build character, the knowledge here is underpinned by our core school values and virtues, including Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. Through weekly dedicated personal development lessons, assemblies, tutor time and Curriculum Enhancement days, students take part in a well-planned and sequenced programme to ensure they are committing age-appropriate knowledge to memory. Students are encouraged to develop their individual character, learn how to stay safe and healthy and develop knowledge to ensure they are well equipped for the future. All students study 6 core themes throughout the Personal Development curriculum. Full learning journeys can be accessed through the following link: https://www.charlton.uk.com/our-school/personal-development

The core themes are as follows

  • Rights, Responsibilities and British Values
  • Celebrating Diversity and Equality
  • Relationships and Sex Education
  • Staying Safe online and Offline
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Life Beyond School (Careers)

As part of our personal development curriculum, students will take part in a number of enrichment activities in school tomorrow. These are as follows:

Heads of Year and Pastoral Managers will be available for students who may be affected by the content of the sessions or need further advice or guidance. Please also discuss the content of the learning with your child and encourage them to seek support or ask further questions, if needed. There are many ways students at Charlton can reach out, including ‘Tootoot’, our online reporting system.

‘Tootoot’ is a safe, secure, and diverse web-based safeguarding tool, which allows students to report wellbeing concerns as well as any bullying issues they may be facing, in an anonymous, confidential and discrete manner. These individual cases are monitored, managed, and resolved by staff within the school. Tootoot reduces the friction and stigma attached to the reporting of such incidents, and ultimately provides us with the tools required to track, monitor, and resolve cases efficiently, support wellbeing and reduce instances of bullying. Tootoot not only encourages students to report their concerns, it also encourages them to work together and strengthen communication links between them and their teachers by removing barriers. Each student has received an email with a link to set up a secure password, which can be found by students searching for Tootoot in their school email account. Once set up they can quickly report incidents and concerns directly to school. Each school has their own sub-domain, therefore only teachers and students from our school will be able to communicate with one another. All students are anonymous at the point of reporting, but identities can be uncovered by the school’s designated Tootoot administrator only if it appears the student’s emotional or physical well-being is at serious risk. Once their account is set up students can access Tootoot on any web-enable device. Please encourage your child to report any concerns they may have by speaking to their Form Tutor, Head of Year, Pastoral Manager or reporting on ‘Tootoot’.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement.

A Vickers
