Reading at Home
At Charlton we take pride in being a reading school and as such, ensure your child reads for a minimum of 15 minutes a day with a fortnightly library session (during one of their English lessons) in which they are given a full hour to read independently. Students also use this time to quiz on the books they have read using our Accelerated Reader programme.
Dear Parent / Carer,
I hope this email finds you safe and well.
This is not something we wish to lose over the course of the school’s closure. I am therefore inviting you to make use of the fantastic reading facilities available to your child whilst studying from home.
Telford and Wrekin library offers an invaluable online opportunity for adults and young people alike to read a range of ebooks. This format can be accessed via the website(https://telford.overdrive.com/) . Alternatively, students can download the app that will allow them access to reading materials on their phones or portable devices.
To access this service, they or a family member need a library card and a pin number to log into the site. Any family without a library card can join online; however, you do have to be over 16 to do this online so a parent/guardian would have to do it on behalf of the student; this process takes less than 5 minutes to do.
This can be done here: https://www.telford.gov.uk/info/1012/libraries/3/join_the_library/2
From here you will be given a temporary card number and pin to be able to log in and read immediately!
Additionally, I have also ensured that students are able to continue quizzing on their books using the Accelerated Reader programme which they can now access from home.
I have compiled a list of Accelerated Reader texts that can be accessed through the Telford and Wrekin online library:
