Year 11 GCSE Adaptations
Dear Parent/carers,
The consultation process on the Summer 2022 examinations has now concluded and the proposed changes to the assessment of GCSEs have been published. The full consultation outcomes can be found online: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/proposed-changes-to-the-assessment-of-gcses-as-and-a-levels-in-2022/outcome/decisions-proposed-changes-to-the-assessment-of-gcses-as-and-a-levels-in-2022.
In summary, these decisions mean that for Summer 2022 exams:
- There will be optional topics and content in GCSE English literature, history and geography.
- Centres will be allowed to deliver practical work in GCSE biology, chemistry, physics and combined science by demonstration only, as opposed to students having to complete all the practicals themselves.
- Students taking GCSE art and design will be assessed on their portfolio only.
- Exam boards will provide advance information about the focus of the content of the exams for all other GCSE subjects (except GCSE English literature, history, ancient history and geography). Advanced information will be provided by 7th February 2022, at the latest. This will enable teachers to plan to adapt their teaching in the second half of the spring term, as necessary.
- Students will be given a formulae sheet for GCSE mathematics. Exam boards will provide copies of the formulae sheet for use in teaching and to ensure that students are familiar with it prior to the exams.
- Students will be given a revised equation sheet for GCSE physics and combined science in summer 2022, covering all the equations required in the subject content.
All our teachers will be sharing specific information about these changes to students in their lessons and there will be an opportunity for parents to discuss the changes and implications at the Year 11 parent evening in January 2022.
Yours faithfully
Mr A McNaughton
